Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from travelers and renters in Oman

Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to rent a car in Oman?

If you are on a tourist visa, the Royal Oman Police allow you to drive using a valid foreign license for the duration of your visit (up to 3 months). Individual rental vendors may still have their own policies — some require an IDP, others accept your home country license alone. Local Omani offices tend to be more flexible than international brands. We can confirm the specific requirements for any car listed on Locationik before you book.

What is the difference between 4WD, AWD, and 2WD — and what do I actually need?

Most Oman trips do not require 4WD. AWD or a regular sedan handles Muscat, paved roads to Salalah, and most popular destinations. Real 4WD is typically needed for the desert dunes at Wahiba Sands and the mountain checkpoints at Jabal Akhdar and Jabal Shams, where police verify 4WD before allowing entry. For desert camp access, some camps may allow AWD vehicles if prepared correctly — follow the camp or vendor’s instructions and avoid driving into sand without local guidance.

Can I rent a car with my foreign driver’s license?

Yes, in most cases. The main variable is vendor policy — some offices still ask for an International Driving Permit (IDP), particularly international brands at the airport. Local Omani offices are usually more flexible. Message us before booking and we will confirm the specific vendor’s requirements.

What deposit will I be charged, and when do I get it back?

Most local rental vendors take a refundable deposit (commonly around 50 OMR for small cars) to cover potential traffic fines. The deposit is typically returned around 30 days after your rental ends — this delay allows time for any traffic fines to appear in the Royal Oman Police system. Some international brands take larger deposits (250–500 OMR) for SUVs and 4WDs. We confirm the deposit amount before your booking is finalized.

Can I pay by credit card, or is cash required?

The rental booking can be paid online by card through our secure payment partner Paymob. Any separate deposit requirement is shown or confirmed before booking — depending on the vendor, deposits may be held on a card or collected at pickup.

Do rental cars in Oman include unlimited mileage?

Most local Oman rental vendors include unlimited mileage within Oman as standard. International brands sometimes have daily kilometer caps with overage charges. Mileage policy is shown on listings where the data is available, and we confirm the exact policy before your booking is finalized.

Is airport pickup available, especially for late-night arrivals?

Many of our vendors offer Muscat International Airport pickup, including late-night and early-morning flights. Some include this in the rental price, others charge a small delivery fee. Available pickup or delivery options are shown on listings where configured, and we coordinate the exact pickup arrangement with the vendor before your booking is confirmed.

What if I am under 25 — can I still rent a car?

It depends on the vendor. Most international brands require drivers to be 25 or older. Local Omani vendors are usually more flexible and may rent to drivers aged 21+. If you are under 25, message us before booking and we will confirm which vendors in our marketplace can serve you.

Can I drive a sedan to Wahiba Sands, Jabal Akhdar, or Jabal Shams?

For Wahiba Sands desert camps, you need an AWD or 4WD; sedans cannot drive on sand. For Jabal Akhdar and Jabal Shams, Royal Oman Police checkpoints require a 4WD or proper AWD — sedans are typically turned back. For other destinations across Oman (Salalah, Nizwa, Sur, Wadi Shab beach areas, and most coastal routes), a regular sedan is fine.

What happens if I get a traffic fine while driving?

Traffic fines registered to your rental car are typically deducted from your deposit. The 30-day deposit return period exists specifically to allow time for fines to appear in the Royal Oman Police system. You should be notified by the vendor if a fine appears against your booking before any deduction is made, and Locationik can help clarify the issue with the vendor if there is a dispute.

Information may vary by vendor and is confirmed before booking.Last updated: 2026-05-16
